Learning Objectives:
At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Define the key components of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and explain its relevance to pharmacy technicians.
  2. Identify examples of Protected Health Information (PHI) commonly encountered in pharmacy settings and describe best practices for its management and protection.
  3. Describe the patient rights established by the HIPAA Privacy Rule and the corresponding responsibilities of pharmacy technicians.
  4. Summarize the administrative, physical, and technical safeguards mandated by the HIPAA Security Rule for the protection of electronic Protected Health Information (e-PHI).
  5. Recognize potential breaches of PHI and e-PHI in pharmacy settings and articulate the appropriate steps for responding to and reporting such breaches.
