At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Define the key components of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and explain its relevance to pharmacy technicians.
- Identify examples of Protected Health Information (PHI) commonly encountered in pharmacy settings and describe best practices for its management and protection.
- Describe the patient rights established by the HIPAA Privacy Rule and the corresponding responsibilities of pharmacy technicians.
- Summarize the administrative, physical, and technical safeguards mandated by the HIPAA Security Rule for the protection of electronic Protected Health Information (e-PHI).
- Recognize potential breaches of PHI and e-PHI in pharmacy settings and articulate the appropriate steps for responding to and reporting such breaches.
