HIV Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Understand HIV transmission, types of exposures, and risk assessment.
  2. Describe the role of the pharmacist in sexual health and STI management.
  3. Describe effective strategies to build trust with patients when taking a sexual history.
  4. Explain the ³5Ps + 3´approach and its importance in the sexual history.
  5. Explain the concept of gender diversity and the needs of LGBTQ+ patients.
  6. Discuss issues surrounding medical mistrust and equity gaps and how they impact patient care.
  7. Explain the roles of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and
    HIV treatment in STI/HIV prevention.
  8. Identify key STI/HIV counseling tips in the pharmacy setting.
  9. Implement PEP protocols, including point-of-care testing, patient assessment, and counseling.
  10. Identify special circumstances surrounding STI testing and treatment of minors.
  11. Discuss STI reporting and how to work with public health in the comprehensive care of
    patients.
