Learning Objectives:
At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss strategies for optimizing quality of diabetes care.
  2. Describe the implications of social determinants of health in diabetes management.
  3. List different types of diabetes.
  4. Recognize various diabetes screening recommendations.
  5. Discuss diabetes prevention strategies.
  6. Describe different methods for monitoring glycemic control.
  7. Identify services pharmacy can offer to contribute to optimal diabetes care.
  8. Recognize various diabetes pharmacotherapy options and their potential side effects.
  9. Describe the comorbidity benefits of glucose-lowering medications.
  10. Discuss diabetes treatment options recommended by the American Diabetes Association Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes 2021.
  11. Distinguish among treatment recommendations for different types of diabetes (type 1 vs type 2 etc.) and populations (pregnancy, youth, adults, older adults, etc.).
  12. Discuss the roles of individuals involved in diabetes management (parents, caregivers, school personnel, specialists, etc.)
  13. List strategies to optimize diabetes medication safety such as medication management interventions, monitoring parameters, hypoglycemia prevention/ management, carbohydrate counting/meal planning, regimen simplification, risk assessments, protocols, order sets, use of technology and decision support, and medication reconciliation.
  14. Recognize comprehensive cardiovascular risk reduction strategies (diet/exercise, obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, smoking cessation, antiplatelet therapy).
  15. Identify strategies to reduce risk of microvascular complications (nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy).
  16. Discuss how diabetes care may change depending on the setting (inpatient, outpatient, long-term care facility, perioperative, etc.) and acuity (emergency department, stable inpatient, critically-ill, transitions of care, etc.).
