Her dedication to pharmaceutical compounding is not just a career; it’s her passion. For nearly two decades, she has been at the forefront of ensuring safe and compliant compounding practices, consistently raising the bar for quality and safety in this critical area of pharmaceutical compounding.
Her career began in 2005 at a community hospital, where she was quickly promoted to Lead IV Technician due to her skills and dedication. In this role, she developed a robust compounding compliance program.
Recognizing her expertise, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health promoted Erika to Region Manager of Pharmacy Compounding. This role expanded her reach to additional acute care, critical access, and ambulatory care facilities across two states. Here, she created and implemented a standardized program that covered sterile, non-sterile, and hazardous drug compounding.
In 2024, Erika was promoted to System Manager of Pharmacy Compounding for CommonSpirit Health. This new position places her at the forefront of the entire health system’s compounding program for more than 140 hospitals. As the system’s subject matter expert on compounding, she develops and implements policies, procedures, and guidance documents to ensure regulatory compliance and patient safety. Additionally, she oversees the 503B Outsourcing Program, managing all aspects of quality assurance, including initial and ongoing inspections.

System-Wide Standardization: I design and implement comprehensive guidance documents, training, policies, and procedures that govern compounding practices across CommonSpirit Health. My goal is to ensure that every facility, regardless of size or location, operates under a standardized model that prioritizes patient safety and regulatory adherence. This year, the next step to standardization was realized when I able to implement a cloud-based software suite across the entire organization to standardize, manage, track and verify pharmaceutical compounding daily operations.
503B Quality Assurance: I manage the oversight of our 503B Outsourcing Program. This includes conducting rigorous initial vetting and ongoing quality assurance inspections to ensure that our outsourced preparations meet the highest safety and quality standards before reaching patients. Serving as the vital link connecting 503B outsourcing facilities to our patient care environments, I feel a profound personal accountability for the safety, quality, and integrity of every single product delivered to our patients from these external providers.
Regulatory Leadership & Advocacy: My work extends beyond internal operations to shape best practices in the field. I have collaborated with regulatory bodies, such as the Washington State Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission.
Education and Professional Development: As a national speaker and educator on compounding compliance, I am dedicated to sharing knowledge and mentoring fellow technicians. I have had the honor of serving as a national speaker and presenter for many years, delivering educational sessions on best practices and regulatory compliance within pharmaceutical compounding.

What First Drew Her to This Work
My path into pharmacy began entirely by chance. In high school, I had to complete a senior project to graduate, which included a career assessment questionnaire. The results highlighted three potential professions for me: phlebotomist, coroner, and pharmacy technician. Around the same time, my school advisor encouraged me to apply for a technical school scholarship. After receiving the award, my advisor suggested using it for a local technical school’s pharmacy technician training program—and that is where my journey officially began.
I vividly recall my first day as a pharmacy technician intern at a community hospital. As I was introduced to the diverse responsibilities of technicians in that facility, I instantly fell in love with compounding. At that precise moment, I knew I wanted to focus my entire career on it. The deeper I delved into hospital-based compounding, the more captivating it became. In my free time, I immersed myself in learning everything I could about the field. I was fortunate to connect with and be mentored by some of the industry’s leading subject matter experts, which further fueled my passion for compounding safety and compliance.
My commitment to continuous quality improvement and safe compounding practices was solidified by the tragic 2012 compounding catastrophe, in which lives were lost and countless others were permanently impacted due to sheer negligence. That pivotal event inspired me to dedicate the rest of my career to advancing compounding standards and elevating patient safety. I made it my personal mission to do my part in ensuring that every patient receives high-quality, safe compounded sterile preparations every time.

The achievement I am most proud of is the design and execution of a comprehensive, standardized compounding program that successfully achieved zero regulatory findings across every facility under my oversight.
For me, this milestone was never just about passing an inspection; it was the validation of a philosophy I have championed throughout my career: that patient safety is not a matter of luck, but a result of rigorous design. Achieving this record meant I had successfully bridged the gap between complex regulatory mandates and the daily reality of the frontline technician. It proved that when we provide our teams with clear, standardized frameworks, robust training, and reliable infrastructure, we empower them to move beyond “compliance” and become the primary architects of clinical integrity. This success cemented my commitment to system-wide standardization—ensuring that the shield of safety I built in one facility could be scaled and replicated to protect patients across the entire health system.

Never stop being a student of your craft, because ongoing education forms the cornerstone of clinical excellence. Actively pursue advanced certifications and training to formally validate your specialized expertise, deepen your mastery of complex compounding, and stay ahead of rapidly evolving regulatory frameworks. Furthermore, actively invest in developing soft skills like effective communication, project management, and conflict resolution. Most importantly, do not be afraid to advocate for yourself in any role you are passionate about. Opportunities for technicians to step into leadership roles are seldom offered, and you will likely hear more “no’s” than “yes’s”—but you must keep asking. Don’t just ask for the opportunity; bring the ideas behind your ask, master your craft, and prove you are ready to lead. If the door doesn’t open for you, build your own door. Your frontline perspective is uniquely vital for driving operational strategy, closing the gap between compliance policies and practical workflows, and ensuring uncompromising clinical safety for every patient.
