Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletion

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:

1. Identify risk factors for nutrient deficiencies.
2. Discuss the prevalence of nutrient deficiencies.
3. Describe mechanisms of drug-induced nutrient depletion.
4. List nutrients that may be depleted by acid blockers.
5. Describe who is at risk for proton pump inhibitor-related hypomagnesemia.
6. List nutrients that may be depleted by antibiotics.
7. Describe which antibiotics are most like to cause vitamin K depletion.
8. Describe why vitamin D supplements are needed for patients who take anticonvulsants.
9. List minerals that may be depleted by diuretics.
10. Identify foods that are rich sources of magnesium.
11. List symptoms of magnesium deficiency.
12. Describe the clinical significance of estrogen effects on B vitamins.
13. Explain how salicylates may affect vitamin C.
14. List the nutrients that can be affected by the use of corticosteroids.
15. Explain why coenzyme Q10 may be effective for treating or preventing statin-related muscle side effects.
