Pain Management for Pharmacy Professionals


Learning Objectives:

At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss the pathophysiology, classifications, and characteristic types of pain.
  2. Discuss realistic and obtainable goals of pain management therapy.
  3. Discuss available assessment tools.
  4. Utilize multimodal analgesia to select an appropriate pain regimen.
  5. Describe risks and benefits of first-line treatments to chronic pain.
  6. Identify nonopioid medications for various types of chronic pain.
  7. Identify nonpharmacologic treatment options for various types of chronic pain.
  8. Discuss the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of analgesics.
  9. List newly approved analgesic drugs and their drug class.
  10. Convert between different opioid-containing formulations and recommend appropriate dosing.
  11. Discuss effective strategies for appropriate opioid use, adverse effects, and proper disposal.
  12. Outline risk factors in identifying patients’ potential for opioid tolerance and dependence.
