Advocacy

NPTA provides dedicated advocacy for pharmacy technicians, ensuring their voices are heard in regulatory and legislative processes. Our advocacy efforts are essential for creating a more unified and respected pharmacy technician community.

Key Areas of Regulatory Advocacy

NPTA’s regulatory advocacy focuses on four key areas: standardized education and training requirements, mandatory certification exams, mandatory registration or licensure with state boards of pharmacy, and representation of pharmacy technicians on state boards to ensure their voices are heard.

At NPTA, our advocacy is deeply rooted in the belief that standardized education and training for pharmacy technicians are essential for the profession’s advancement. We champion a standardized model for all education and training institutions, ensuring consistency and significantly enhancing the quality of education received by every technician. This approach not only prepares technicians with the comprehensive skills needed for today’s demanding healthcare environment but also elevates the profession as a whole. By supporting and promoting standardized education, NPTA is committed to fostering excellence and consistency across the pharmacy technician community.

At NPTA, we firmly advocate for mandatory CPhT certification (providing individuals choice of either NHA or PTCB). It is our chief interest that all professionals prove their competence by passing these essential assessments. A robust examination mechanism ensures that all pharmaceutical professionals possess the required skills and knowledge for reliable service delivery. By supporting mandatory certification, NPTA is dedicated to upholding the highest standards in the pharmacy technician profession, ensuring that every technician is fully equipped to meet the demands of today’s healthcare environment with excellence and reliability.

At NPTA, we strongly advocate for mandatory registration or licensure with state boards of pharmacy. A unified roster of all individuals and institutions in the pharmaceutical sector significantly improves oversight and efficiency. With a unified platform, there is an assurance of orderliness and the consistent enforcement of essential professional ethics. This approach not only enhances the integrity of the profession but also ensures that every pharmacy technician operates under the highest standards of accountability and excellence. By championing mandatory registration, NPTA is committed to fostering a more organized, ethical, and reliable pharmaceutical landscape.

At NPTA, we advocate for a minimum of one pharmacy technician serving as a member of the state board of pharmacy. Representation at this level ensures that our voices are heard and our perspectives are considered. Having a technician on the board guarantees there is no disconnect at the state level, promoting policies and decisions that reflect the real-world experiences and challenges faced by pharmacy technicians. By supporting this representation, NPTA is committed to bridging the gap between frontline professionals and regulatory bodies, ensuring a more inclusive and effective approach to pharmacy governance.

NPTA played an instrumental role in the 2009 passage of Emily’s Law in Ohio, following the tragic death of Emily Jerry.
